About Holbæk

The Holbæk region is a large spread Country area situated to the North West of Sjælland about 37 miles (60 Kilometres) from Copenhagen. The original old town of Holbæk has risen from the former castle, Holbæk Castle, which was founded in the year 1236 by King Valdemar Sejr. There are two know explanations of the Name Holbæk. Either the meaning has to do with “The hollow Stream” referring to the stream that ran through the town or it simply means “The Holy Stream” – Holbæk.

Description of todays municipality of Holbæk
The municipality of Holbæk has a beautiful and varied nature with hilly ice age countryside, large forest areas, part of the reclaimed Lamme Fiordand is close to coastal areas.

At the same time the area has attractions such as Andelslands byen Nyvang(a village co-operative), Holbæk Museum and special churches. There are local music and theatre activities, and the municipality has a wide offering of leisure activities such as golf. Holbæk is thus an attractive living area with an increasing population. The municipality is centrally placed on the island of Sjælland and is therefore a suitable area for establishing business enterprise.

Holbæk is a traffic junction –there are trains to and from Copenhagen every hour with connections to Copenhagen Airport in Kastrup. Copenhagen can be reached in approx. 45 minutes by car. 58% of the working force have jobs within the Holbæk area, while 42% commute, mainly to the metropolitan area. Holbæk has a professional frequency above the country’s average and correspondingly low unemployment.

Within to Holbæk area there are several comprehensive and private schools, an O Level College, Poly Techniques and a Teachers training college, and Holbæk Seminarium.
